1. Ginger
Ginger contains over 25 different antioxidants, making it a powerhouse for fighting free radicals throughout your body. It is most commonly known for its ability to reduce nausea and vomiting. Aside from this, it can relieve indigestion and bloat, as well as curing symptoms of the common cold due to its antiviral properties. Try it in tea form by adding a few slices to a cup of hot water with a spoonful of honey and sliced lemon.
2. Lemongrass
Lemongrass is grown prolifically in Costa Rica and can be found throughout many Central American countries. Nutritionally, it is an excellent source of Vitamins A and C, folic acid, magnesium, zinc, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, and manganese. It's like all your most important supplements jam-packed into one plant! Along with this, it's a wonderful remedy for cold and flu, detoxification, and aids in digestion. This plant can also be consumed in tea form.
3. Chamomile
Chamomille has long been used as an herbal remedy for medical complaints, dating back even to ancient Egypt and Rome. Costa Ricans also love this herb for use in natural healing, and reap it's spectrum of benefits.Chamomille eases stomach cramps, remedies insomnia by helping you fall asleep faster, and treats migraines. This also can be consumed as tea or used in th form of an essential oil.
4. Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is known among Costa Ricans as the "miracle plant", and for good reason. It soothes minor burns, relieves the sting and itch of insect bites (definitely essential in Costa Rica!), and moisturizes dry skin. The gel can actually be used straight from the plant and smoothed onto affected areas.
5. Turmeric
Turmeric, a spice of the ginger family, is thought to be one of the most beneficial and potent antioxidants in the world. It contains curcuminoids, which act as powerful anti-inflammatory compounds, bringing relief from joint pain. It also has anti-tumor, anti-bacterial, and anti-microbial properties. Turmeric can be added to your diet in the form of tea, a spice added to your dishes or smoothies, or even a paste.
6. Passionflower
Passionflower is traditionally used in Costa Rica to treat anxiety and insomnia. It is a mild muscle relaxant, and can also be used to treat dizziness as well as hypertension and ulcers. Try this (of course) in a cup of tea!
